In case you missed it, Forrest Fenn, a retired Art dealer out of Santa Fe, New Mexico, a 
seasoned Vietnam Veteran who was shot down twice on missions, and most important an old Texas boy like myself, has hidden an estimated 2 million dollar treasure chest somewhere in the mountains “North of Santa Fe”.
This happened a couple of years ago and from what I can gather there have been thousands of people out looking for it. If anyone has found it yet, they’re not telling. Forrest Fenn has a resource page set up with interviews and blogs about the search here. He also has a memoir out, that, along with the interesting life he’s led, also includes clues to the treasure, the most important clue being the poem, that if “followed precisely will lead to the treasure.
The book can only be bought at Collected Works Bookstore in Santa Fe, and the proceeds go to the book store and to cancer research.
So, I drove up to Santa Fe the other day to buy the book. As I was buying it the clerk asked me if I will be the one who finds the treasure. She said it playfully (I’m sure she get’s all kinds of folk in there looking for the book) but I just shook my head no and said I’m not looking for it.
That may have been a lie. I’m not looking for it “seriously”, in that, I’m not spending every dime I have chasing clues in the boondocks, but I live fairly close to the guesstamated area so I figure, if nothing else, it would make for a good weekend excursion now and then. Plus, I think I have some good ideas on possible locations. Sherlock Holmes I am not though, so don’t expect me to return one of these days a bonified millionaire. Mostly expect me to return, full of scrapes and bruises, smelling like a wet molded pine cone and needing a shower, which if you know me at all, is pretty much heaven for me anyway….
It won’t be very often,. I’m still looking for work, (times are tough out there) but maybe I can scrape enough dough together once in a while to make a trip up north of Santa Fe. Just north though.

The book itself is an interesting read, if you like reading about individual histories of folk, and I do. I think Forrest Fenn has led a more than usual interesting life. I’d suggest buying it direct from the store though, Amazon has used copies going for 130 bucks a piece.

Nice story and good information. Mine is one of the blogs you’ve listed. I wonder if anyone has actually devoted all their income to searching for the treasure. I know I have not. Which makes me wonder how I can possibly expect to find it if those others are so much more intense than me….Maybe I’ll just trip over it some day when I am out. But looking for it is a lot of fun and gets a person off his duff and away from the computer.

I agree. I think the fun is in the looking or even the thinking about the looking. I’d hate to think someone would spend their savings looking for it, but you never know. Guess it would be worth it if they found it. I don’t plan to go too far from where I am, so if its not in New Mexico, which most think its not, then I’ll at least get some good hiking and camping out if it.

For me the poem was rather easy to figure out. As soon as I’d read it, I realized I’d been there as a teenager. There is enough stuff on the internet now about Forrest that has e-mail responses, interviews, videos and book quotes that one can get inside his head and physically see his 80+ year old body. He’s made it clear that you can find it with just the poem and not the book. I don’t even have the book yet. Just take the poem and the words as facts and don’t add or subtract weird meanings. He was a USAF pilot that now thinks like an ancient NM Indian / Cowboy / Archeologist. The poem is all about finding an absolute location as if you were looking at it from the air but physically being on the ground. The key is that you have to identify the beginning to find the end, but you won’t have to go to the beginning to claim the treasure. I just wish he had put some of his fluted points in the chest….guess I’ll have to swap the bracelet he wants back for some of them.

I think there are a few people are “sure” of where it is, until they get to that spot and it’s not there… 🙂
Bill is a “skeptic”. Can not say there is no treasure out there for people to find but based on all the “discrepancies” in the book, I think we are all being fooled by a very clever man for reasons only the government could understand….
Here are my interpretations of the poem, for what they are worth. My first guess would be Yellowstone because Mr. Fenn recently wrote about that being a favorite spot of his and because the map in the book has a W on it. That could mean Wyoming and the gold on the map kind of makes an X where Yellowstone would be if it were Wyoming. Also, Yellowstone is West of Toledo and North of Sante Fe.
1. Warm waters halt. Hot Springs
2. Not far but to far to walk. A waterfall
3. Below the home of Brown. Brown trout
4. No paddle up your creek. You’ll be going down stream
5. Heavy loads and water high. The waterfall again
6. The blaze. A mark of some sort
7. Marvel gaze. A beautiful landscape
8. Worth the cold. High elevation
Well here is a clur I will give you that I know for sure , He said just take it and go , well if its on Goverment Property you can’t keep it , So its on his property . I looked it up he ownes lots ad lots of property enough to hid this tresure trus me , thats where it is, and I know where and if everything works out Ill be comeing there this summer to get my treasure and become the Millionare I am suposed to be. sorry my computer is taking and adding letters hope you can read this , Good Luck everyone .

Kimberlee, I think those are great interpretations. My focus is mostly on New Mexico, mostly because I live here and doubt I’ll make it to other possible locations. It gives me something to look for while I’m out bouncing around in the woods anyway. 🙂

what makes you thunk this?
I have a feeling the teasure was found quite some time ago…I heard of this story earlier this morning on the Today show. In less than two hours I am positive of the location. I am no Indiana Jones, but the poem was too easy to interpret.
The treasure is not in Lea lake. Lea Lake is south of Santa Fe.

No busques, I hear that a lot from people when they first start deciphering the poem. That it was too easy. Then you hear later, after they go look, that maybe its not as easy as it seems. What’s the fun in finding it, and not telling any body and or selling it? 🙂

Ok-completely captivated by this “hunt!” I have been trying my best to desiphere meaning and locations. I am convinsed that the treasure is in fact under water. The location is fuzzy at best but I am not a New Mexico native. It seems obvious to look in the steep northern mountains and trace the rivers for clues. Heavy loads indicate lifting rocks or objects in deep water. I am assuming location begins at or near a hot spring(s) and heads downstream to colder waters. Sounds like a lot of hiking and possible tredding through rough waters. I find it interesting that Forest states his bones will be found among the treasure…will he make his way to the spot moments before his death and lie there or wade there? Is another individual responsible for placing his remains at the sight? Is he thoroughly convinced no one will find his treasure but rather stumble upon it in the distant future? So many questions. One thing has come of this search of mine…I may just plan a treasure hunting vacation, something I had not ever considered before. I will also continue my research and may end up lucky enough to claim the fortune!

I think underwater is a great interpretation. It would definitely make finding it harder.
He’s stated (or I read in the book) that he plans on going to the location when his time is up and taking some pills, ending his life on his terms like his father did.

Well, I think you would need a specific location, maybe in a river that runs under a boulder cropping or something. My biggest problem with water is, the water level changes from year to year so I don’t know that Forrest would put it somewhere that would likely be uncovered naturally.
IMHO the “Treasure” will not be found. Book heading into 3rd printing. Sales gone viral w/copy on eBay @$500. Clues like >5000′ really tell nothing when compared to Rocky Mtn. If found today who’s going to buy these books? Fenn’s “good friend” J Evetts Haley wrote a book about LBJ…..classic Fenn on how crooked Gov’t is…..& coming from someone that’s been stung, setup and busted a real treasure to read. Ironic that there are 3 suicides in Haley book & 3 so far in the Fenn related investigation which he says is over & the Gov’t says is still ongoing.

Plasma, as I’ve said before, i appreciate skeptisim, but you seem to have more of a chip on your shoulder concerning Fenn, than simply skeptisim of the treasure. I dont mind hearing peoples thoughts on it, though i think your missing the point, but your contining campaign to disuade searchers and or discreditFenn would be better spent on your own blog than commenting about it here. I think that Forest is a very clever man. Poems never mean exactly how they read. When I started reading his poem it all sounded too easy. If it sounds to good to be true than it is. He has said that he wants someone to find his bones with the treasure. He left a memoire in a sealed jar so that in a 1000 years from now the person who does find it will know who he was. One thing to consider, Where can an old gentelman of 80 years hide a chest of gold and leave his bones for someone to find 1000 years from now? Iam living in Texas, so I cannot just go seeking treasure at the drop of a hat, but when I get at least enough places together to make a week of it, I will be heading to the mountians noth of Santa Fe. Remeber one thing, its no place for the weak, stay aleart and be carefull.
I would just like to know one thing?? based upon previous comments and based on what Fenn wants (for people to get out as families and put the electronics down) is this ‘treasure trek’ thus far for some actually been KID friendly??? my kiddo is under the age of 10…would such conditions really be advisable?
Miranda, I would say wait until late spring. It’s dangerous out there this time of year, as the recent article about the woman who got trapped on the mountain while looking for it suggests.

Mostly, just go with your comfort zone. The mountains are a great place to take kids, but you also have to know where not to take them. I do think though, that anywhere Fenn could go, a 10 year old could go also. So if you have a spot picked out that your concerned might be too dangerous for a 10 year old, it would probably be too dangerous for an 80 year old also. 🙂 Good luck, be careful, and have fun.

Did I miss something in the poem? I thought we were looking for buried treasure, not sunken treasure. I think those out there that say it’s in a lake, or under water are a little waterlogged themselves. I live in Tucson, and have spent maybe 8 hours of time deciphering the poem. It’s in New Mexico, no where else. Forrest gives you 9 clues, and out of those 9 I have figured them all out. I just do not know the true location, but when I find the starting point, look out.
First you need to understand the concept of the poem, and that goes back about 65 to 70 years in Forrest Fenn’s life.
I will give you one clue…. If you’ve been wise and found the BLAZE…. Have you ever tried to look for anything at night? This is not a Grouse Hunt with a burlap bag and a flashlight. When you find the X, I hope it’s in the BLAZing Sun of the day.

If you do some research on Forrest, I think that you will learn that he has a very deep history outside of New Mexico, making the chances that the treasure are not in New Mexico very great. Also, with enough research you understand two things. !) Forrest is a pilot and 2) He owns and still fly’s his plane. This makes the job of getting the treasure out of New Mexico very easy for him. I believe I absolutely know where the starting point is at…and you better be a historian to understand where to start. I will give you this; The starting point is not what you think it is and it sure isn’t in New Mexico…

You’re right Caynon, Forrest has also mentioned that he often times took his plane out,landed in some obscure location and camped next to some isolated creek… he’s also been known to fly out looking for ancient ruins, then landing and exploring them…
1) I am also a pilot… 2) I had to sell my plane…. Once you’re a pilot, you’re always a pilot, but you have to pass the physical. I thought I read that Forrest would like to lay next to his treasure on passing? I seriously doubt if he could fly his plane at that stage of his life. I do feel for him. NOW, do think he wants to be that far away from his treasure? I wouldn’t. I have a gut feeling people pass-by his treasure everyday, and Forrest just sits in his chair and smiles. SO, lash yourself to the mast, and listen up…… “If you are brave and in the wood”….. That’s wonderful that you are a pilot, I always wanted to be one growing up but never chased that dream. Top Gun the movie had come out about the time I was 10 or so, and that was absolutely what I thought I was going to do with my life…but enough about me, I’m sorry you had to sell your plane.
I feel that you are assuming Forrest would NOT be of sound mind and body when he decides that it’s time to end it. I believe that his father took his own life, and I remember Forrest talking about going there, being with the treasure, and taking a bunch of pills to end it if he was to get “the word” from the doc that he had 3-6 months to live. His mind, body and spirit could be as sharp as a tack still, true? In my mind…still flying, i mean, what’s the worst thing that could happen as you fly to go kill yourself? You crash and die?
Do I think that he is that far from his treasure? (yes) The term “far” is very relative, is it not? Far to what? Far like…To the end of a football field far? From Cheyenne to Denver far? From Santa Fe to Ojo Caliente far? Ojo Sarco? or Jemez falls? It’s all relative…By plane some of those places are a hop skip and a jump. You should know…You’re a pilot.
I agree with you when you say that people pass by it everyday. However, I feel that we may have a different idea of how many people. i believe it’s far fewer than what you might be thinking.
I’m happy that you have some interpretations on the poem, and it’s doing the right thing it sounds like, getting you and maybe the family out in the woods. I know it has for mine. It looks like Forrest and the Thrill of the chase is working just about the way he intended it to. Now if he had only known before hand that we would spend weeks and weeks in front of our computers doing research and reading blogs before we leave on our quests of discovery…he may have done some things differently.
I leave you with this: IMO (and you should already know this) When you land a plane somewhere enough times, over manys of years, you know the elevation of that place like the back of your hand. 5000′ is not a slip of the tongue. “Brown” is not talking about fish…guaranteed. “Blaze” is not going to be the sun. And “waters” is just that…waters. (Not water…waters)
I wish you luck in your trip to Santa Fe, I love the place very much, it holds a lot of meaning and we cant wait to be back there to see my wife’s family. (She’s Santa Clara Pueblo and The Old Santa Fe Trading Company commissions a lot of her fathers work) However, this journey is taking me “North of Santa Fe.”

Alright treasure hunters I’m going to break the poem down for everyone.as I myself have just returned from Santa fe with only memories.which I shall have forever unlike the person that finds the treasure and probably blows it with nothing to show,but I wish them the best and hope they have enough since to let that money be used for the better good.thats another story.ive got fish to fry right now,but I will post my theory shortly.no paddle needed, but chest waders a must.

I live on nc coast where the warm waters halt. I THINK thats why it has not been found. Its not a dam ,a fishing hole or any of that. See what you think. The Gulf Stream separates from the US coast near Cape Hatteras NC (33°N, 75°W) and then travels eastwards across the North Atlantic, becoming the North Atlantic current at about 55°W. In the region between 75°W and 55°W it is subject to meanders and is frequently accompanied by eddies. The northern edge of the current is marked by a sharp fall in temperature. This is also the case at much greater depths, so that the warm current is pressed up against a wall of cold water, called the ‘north wall’. Monthly charts of the path of the north wall of the Gulf Stream have been available from surface, aircraft and satellite observations since 1966 and these have been used in several studies of the path’s variability. well i leave for my trip on the 7th of april and will start my hunt of the 8th. If anyone has any tips for me they like to share feel free but im 97% sure i know where it is and the other 3 % would be if someone has found it and not said nothing about it.So with it all being said just one question lays in my head would it be smarter to sell one item at a time or auction it off? i mean there is a story behind the treasure right?
Well, Luke, the first thing I’d do if I find it, is get a lawyer to handle the legal issues that will come along with it. You want to make sure, before you go public, that the Government isn’t going to take it from ya and or fine you.

Luke….. Excellent questions. How do you sell the treasure to make a profit? I have no idea. I can tell you what I plan to do with the earnings. Pay off my wife’s mortgage, buy her a new SUV, and go to Disney World. The rest I may purchase Space Junk for the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson. Like an old Space Shuttle Main Engine, and a couple of other small rocket engines. Maybe a couple of full scale Saturn Rockets.…….. Best of luck in you quest, and stay safe.

I’m sorry to say, but you’re all chasing ghosts. Furthermore, none of you could be more wrong about where the treasure is. I have studied the poem, had three different theories (none of which any of you had) and decided on my last one. Be in Santa Fe this weekend to recover the treasure, probably donate half to a charity. I think that’s what Forrest wants. (not buying Shuttle Engine) Who has a Shuttle anyway? Just to bring everyone up to date, I made a trip to WY about six weeks back. You remember the snow storms of mid April? Well guess who was in the middle of that. They kind of put a damper on the search, but I did get in some great fishing. All the clues have lead me to Yellowstone. I hope to make a return trip in mid July, if not sooner. Dal is out there at the moment, and if he doesn’t give us some breaking news, I guess my quest is still on. Had all the clues then, and they still shake out the same.
